Frequently Asked Questions

How does the segway move and balance?

Segways use dynamic stabilisation technology. Segways move when you shift your centre of gravity. For example, the wheels will move forward or backward when you lean forward or back.

It is still possible to fall while riding a Segway. However, the Operator equips tour participants with all of the necessary skills to operate a Segway safely. They have a training course that simulates different terrains that participants will experience on the tour.

Segways are designed to balance for you. The rider, though, will be in control of the Segway. This includes the direction and speed. It is important to ride a Segway with care. Be aware of surroundings and hazards.

The Operator provides a Segway training and assessment session at the start of each tour. During this session, the tour leaders will train and assess individuals. If participants can’t demonstrate they can safely operate a Segway, they will not be able to participate.

These segways operate as part of a guided tour. They are not available to be rented without a guide.

On days when it is raining or after heavy rains, you may not be able to go the whole way around the base of Uluru. This is because the tracks can get too muddy and hazardous, and we don’t want to compress the tracks, making tyre marks. On these occasions, you will instead go a quarter of the way around Uluru and spend a little bit more time on foot, exploring caves and waterholes. If you’re lucky, we might even get to see some waterfalls.

Participants are required to wear closed-in shoes whilst participating in any segway tour. Participants wearing flip-flops or thongs will not be permitted to engage in any segway tour under any circumstances.

It's quite sunny in Central Australia; therefore, it's recommended that you wear a shirt that covers your shoulders and that you bring 1L of water, sunscreen and a cap.

During the months of November - March, the afternoons can be warm, please be remember to bring, and drink, plenty of water.

Participants are welcome to bring a backpack or small bag if they wish. The Operator provides water bottle holders for guests to carry their water bottles.

Throughout the tour, you will be able to stop for photographs as the enthusiastic guide shows you the best places to get some fantastic photos. It’s best to keep your hands firmly on the handlebars whilst the Segway is moving. Around Uluru, you are asked not to photograph sites that are considered culturally sensitive. Your experienced guide will help you to discover where these sites are.

1 April - 30 September - 8:20am

November - March - 7:00am

Segwaying is a fun adventure activity, and yes, people do fall off. However, most people that fall off are able to jump back on.

However, this adventure sport is not for everyone, and there are a few limitations and things that tour participants should be aware of prior to booking.

WEIGHT LIMIT

Segway riders must be between 45kg – 117kg (100lb – 258lb). Unfortunately, people outside of these weights are unable to participate in our tours.

AGE LIMIT

Segway riders must be at least 12 years old to participate. The Operator recommends this activity for people between 12 to 55 years old. Riders under the age of 18 years will need to be accompanied by a parent or guardian. If you are above the age of 55, you should be aware that if you fall from a Segway, you are at an increased risk of injury.

CAN I PARTICIPATE IN A TOUR IF I AM PREGNANT?

People who are pregnant should not participate in a Segway tour. This is for their own safety and the safety of their child.

HEALTH CONDITIONS

Segway riding is a fun and adventurous activity and should not be viewed as a mobility assistance activity. The Operator asks that people who join the tours are:

  • in good physical health
  • have the balance and coordination of someone who is able to ride a bicycle
  • are free from health conditions that may be impacted in the event of a fall

If you are uncertain if Segway is the correct activity for you, please contact the Operator.
