December in Cairns is a total tropical dream for fans of summer, with temperatures ranging from 24°c to 32°c. As the summer season kicks in, the weather gets hot and humid, which is perfect for early morning and evening activities. This makes it a great month to experience one of the region’s most exhilarating activities – hot air ballooning over the stunning landscapes of Far North Queensland!

Up, Up and Away

cairns hot air ballooning

December’s weather conditions are so good for hot air ballooning. The calm early morning skies create a serene setting for this unique, picturesque adventure, while the temperatures ensure a comfortable experience without intense heat or humidity later in the day.

The Atherton Tablelands is the region’s best hot air ballooning launchpad. It gives you an excellent perspective of the region’s farmland, forests and rolling hills and a peaceful journey as you float above the diverse landscape.

The early morning liftoffs allow you to witness the golden sunrise lighting up the landscape, creating a magical and tranquil experience. The 360° views from the balloon basket are truly spectacular, giving you a bird’s-eye view of the lush, vibrant scenery below.

Besides the landscape, you’ll also likely spot wildlife from above. Keep your eyes peeled for kangaroos grazing in the fields, birds checking you out and other native animals in their natural habitat – you’ll probably even spot a cow or two. Following your hot air balloon adventure, you’ll be pampered with a glass of bubbly and other treats.

December’s festive vibe is also perfect for other aerial activities, like skydiving and bungee jumping – both providing breathtaking views and heart-pounding excitement. The Kuranda Skyrail provides stunning views of the rainforest and the Barron Gorge in a safer, more relaxing way.
