What to expect from New Zealand in February

March 2, 2024

New Zealand in February boasts deliciously warm, inviting weather that’s so good for outdoor adventures and there’s no better place to experience nature than Abel Tasman National Park on the South Island.

With its golden beaches, lush forests and crystal-clear waters, Abel Tasman is an absolute paradise and February’s pleasant temperatures make it an excellent month to explore the park.

Kayaking in Paradise

Kayaking in Abel Tasman National Park is definitely a must-do activity if you’re visiting New Zealand in February. Tasman Bay’s calm, turquoise waters and stunning coastline are perfect for a day of paddling, giving you Instagram-worthy views and a true feeling of peace

You can chill out completely while you glide along the water, passing secluded coves, pristine beaches and rugged granite cliffs along the way. The scenery is full of breathtaking contrasts, with the vibrant emerald green of the native forest meeting golden sands and creating picture-perfect moments you’ll remember forever.

The many available kayaking tours here usually include stops at some of the park’s iconic spots. There’s Split Apple Rock – a natural rock formation that looks as though it has been split in two – and the Tonga Island Marine Reserve, where you can spot seals sunbathing on the rocks or swimming playfully nearby.

The area’s plethora of marine life makes it perfect for snorkelling too, allowing you to explore the underwater scenery just as easily as the scenery above. While the kayaking itself is a fun adventure, the warm weather of February in New Zealand means you can also enjoy sunbathing on the beaches or taking a refreshing dip in the sea.

The tours are well-designed to offer a good balance between activity, relaxation and learning, with some even including the ability to embark on a self-led kayak experience of this region’s most beautiful areas. Whether you’re an experienced paddler or a beginner, there are kayaking options to suit all skill levels.

Endless Exploration

February in New Zealand’s Abel Tasman National Park is definitely fun to explore by kayak, but if you’d love to get even more hands-on in your explorations, there’s nothing as thrilling as a Torrent River Canyoning experience.

You can slide, float, jump and abseil your way through this spectacular area in a unique and exhilarating way that’s great to add some pep to your visit. Our Things To Do in New Zealand page has even more exciting adventures for you.
