Melbourne in April is the heart of autumn and with blissful temperatures ranging from 10°c to 20°c, it’s an excellent time to explore one of Australia’s most iconic road trips – the Great Ocean Road. With cooler weather and clear days, April’s perfect for long drives and outdoor adventures without the heat of summer or the frosty chill of winter.

The Perfect Autumn Drive

Stretching over 243 kilometres from Torquay to Allansford, the Great Ocean Road has some of the most breathtaking coastal scenery in the world and April's temperate weather lets you enjoy a relaxed and comfortable journey along this stunning route.

This famous road winds through lush rainforests, past rugged cliffs and along pristine beaches. With the autumn-tinted foliage adding a beautiful touch of colour to the landscape, there’s truly no better time or way of exploring this natural wonderland than by joining a Great Ocean Road tour.

All the best Great Ocean Road tours make a stop at the Twelve Apostles. These towering limestone stacks rising from the Southern Ocean are definitely a striking sight in the light of an April morning or sunset. You can also get a heart-thumping thrill out of seeing them from a skydiving point of view!

While the Twelve Apostles are undoubtedly the stars of the journey, there are plenty of other hidden gems along the way. The gorgeous coastal town of Lorne is perfect for a lunch stop, with delicious seafood and stunning ocean views. A short drive inland takes you to the Great Otway National Park, where you can explore ancient rainforests and waterfalls, such as the impressive Erskine Falls.

April in Melbourne is also a great time to search for local wildlife, so keep an eye out for koalas in the eucalypt trees around Kennett River or kangaroos grazing in the grassy plains near Anglesea. If you want to get out and stretch your legs, the Great Ocean Walk spans over 100kms of stunning coastal land, giving you unbeatable views and the chance to experience the region's diverse flora and fauna up close.

A Perfect Autumn Escape

Melbourne in April isn’t all about gorgeous Autumn landscapes – the city’s also bustling with exciting activities, which you can find on our Things To Do in Melbourne page. This month is usually when the Melbourne Easter Show is held too, so hop along and enjoy some Easter cheer!
