Melbourne cityscape

Melbourne in January is full of warm, sunny days that make the city feel light and positive. With temperatures ranging between 14°c and 27°c, it's the perfect time to explore Melbourne’s sights on foot, find its hidden gems and enjoy its beautiful beaches.

Melbourne on Foot

If you’re spending January in Melbourne, you absolutely love exploring the city’s culture and history, and the warm weather makes it an ideal time for walking tours. The city has a multitude of guided walking tours that take you through its colourful laneways with its famous street arts, hidden cafes and cute boutique shops.

A stroll through the historic Royal Botanic Gardens is a must-do too. Enjoy the stunning landscapes, learn about the local flora and birdlife or try a Forest Therapy wellbeing experience.

If you’re interested in Melbourne's architecture, a walking tour of the city’s historic buildings gives you amazing insights into its past, with stops at landmarks like Flinders Street Station and the State Library of Victoria. There’s even a history tour that includes donuts!

Melbourne's busy markets – like the Queen Victoria Market – are the perfect spots for a wander with their cheerful atmospheres, fresh local produce and unique souvenirs. When the sun sets, a Hidden Bars of Melbourne tour or a Haunted Pub tour will delight your tastebuds and sense of adventure!

If you’re more of a daytime person, January in Melbourne is so good for water activities and hitting the beach. From dolphin and seal swims to kayaking, SUP and even Aqua Donut and Electric Picnic Boat hires, Melbourne has it all!

St Kilda Beach boasts golden sands and calm waters, while Brighton Beach – with its colourful bathing boxes – is great for photos. Laze in the sun, take a refreshing swim or stroll along the famous St Kilda Pier for panoramic views of the city skyline.

Jovial January

Melbourne in January is full of fun activities. There’s New Year’s Day celebrations, the Australian Open for sports fans, the Vida Melbourne Latin Festival for those who love great food and dancing, plus so much more on our Things To Do in Melbourne page.
