What to expect from Melbourne in June

Melbourne in June means it’s the start of winter, with temperatures ranging from 6°c to 14°c. While the days may be chilly, the city and its surrounds are full of unique experiences that make this season a truly special time to visit. One of the area’s must-do attractions in June is the Phillip Island Penguin Parade, which attracts nature lovers from all over the world.

The Magic of the Penguin Parade

Phillip Island – which is located just a short drive from Melbourne – is home to the world-famous Penguin Parade. Every evening as the sun dips below the horizon, thousands of adorable Little Penguins (yes, they’re little, but it’s also their actual name as the smallest species of penguin) waddle across the beach from the sea to their burrows on the shore.

This absolutely heartwarming event is one of Australia’s most popular wildlife experiences but the cooler weather in June means that the crowds are generally smaller, giving you a more intimate and immersive experience.

You can choose from several viewing options including general viewing stands or a more secluded underground viewing area, but a guided tour takes you closer to the action and is definitely the way to go. As you watch these adorable penguins make their nightly journey, the cool breeze and the sound of the waves add to the enchanting atmosphere.

While the Penguin Parade is definitely the highlight, Phillip Island has so much more to offer. Most Penguin Parade tours also let you explore the island’s rugged coastline, visit the Nobbies Centre to learn about local marine life or stroll around nearby towns or along scenic walking trails. There’s also the Koala Conservation Centre, where you can observe these adorable marsupials in their natural habitat.

A Winter Wonderland

During June in Melbourne, you can truly embrace the winter chill with the Winter Wonderland event at Docklands, which is usually held this month. With a circus, snow pit, family-friendly activities and so much more, you’ll love the cold after this. To warm your bones, the Firelight Festival also usually occurs in June. There’s also the stunning RISING art festival and for more great activities, check out our Things To Do in Melbourne page.
