January 17, 2024

Christchurch in December is the perfect time and place for festive cheer and adventure, as the city is preparing for Christmas. The summer weather – with lovely temperatures ranging from 10.5°c to 21°c – as well as the many events going on, give you multiple opportunities for relaxation and celebration.

Luxurious Seasonal Indulgence

One of the best things about the festive season is that it gives you an excuse to relax and pamper yourself at the Opuke Thermal Pools and Spa. With stunning views of the Southern Alps, both the Discovery Pools and Tranquility Pools give you a truly calming experience of relaxation and rejuvenation.

The Discovery Pools are great for both single visitors as well as families, with multiple thermal pools where you can luxuriate in the warmth with gorgeous views of the surrounding city.

For a more soothing self-care experience, the Tranquility Pools are a peaceful escape with their calm waters and beautiful alpine vistas. They’re the perfect way to relax after a day of holiday shopping or exploring the city.

If you want to try another luxurious treat, check out the Canterbury Winery Lunch Heli Tour. It starts with an exciting helicopter flight with stunning views of the region. The tour then takes you to some of Canterbury’s best wineries, where you can try tasty local wines paired with a mouthwatering lunch. It’s a unique way to celebrate the festive season with first-class cuisine and scenery.

Festive Celebrations

Christchurch in December is full of Christmas events and activities. The city lights up with Christmas decorations, especially at the Christchurch Christmas Lightshow. There’s Christmas parades and events across the region, followed by NYE celebrations that are a must-see. For everything else, check out our Things To Do in Christchurch page.

If you're travelling at any other times, you can check out Christchurch in January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December.

Kaikoura - Where wildlife reigns supreme

It's rare thing for a construction worker to give you a smile, particularly if you're a gangling male like myself. Therefore you can understand my confusion when all 28 of them flashed their pearly whites at me as we weaved our way through the mountains to Kaikoura. Is New Zealand expensive for backpackers?

Earlier this year, it cost $7.49 to buy a single avocado in New Zealand. Yes, ONE. That's the equivalent of £4 or €4.50. For the same price you could buy yourself 12 pints of beer in Panama, 24 Kit Kats in India, or even 4kg of Spaghetti in Italy. Personally, the idea of eating and […]

Why backpackers are missing a trick with Christchurch!

"Just for a few days right?". That was the response I got when telling people I was going to Christchurch. Countless articles talk about the buzz of Auckland or the thrill of Queenstown, but the South Island's largest city always seems to be unfairly forgotten. I'd describe Christchurch like Justin Bieber - you're not supposed […]

New Zealand is more than just Kiwis and Hobbits

We all know a New Zealander, and we all know that they’re usually confident their country is the best in the world. Having travelled here twice and now lived here for 9 months, I must say, I can see their point. Of course, they’re fairly good at rugby, they have quite endearing accents and little […]
