What to expect from Christchurch in January

February 17, 2024

Christchurch in January is an idyllic time for outdoor activities, with warm summer days creating the perfect conditions to explore the city’s picturesque landscapes. This month, the temperature ranges from 12°c to 22°c and with only occasional rainfall, it’s such a good month for getting out and about to explore the region’s gorgeous waterways.

Adrift on the Avon

Punting on the Avon River is definitely a must-do and one of the most serene experiences to enjoy during January in Christchurch. Relax under an umbrella while you gently glide through the heart of the city in a traditional flat-bottomed boat, steered by an expert punter.

As you float past the charming English-style architecture that lines the riverbanks, you’ll hear interesting stories about the city’s history and see the lush flora of the Christchurch Botanic Gardens. With a peaceful atmosphere and blissful views, punting on the Avon River is a unique and iconic way to escape the hustle and bustle.

For those looking for more adventure, January in Christchurch is also a fantastic time for kayaking along some of Christchurch’s most stunning coastal areas. Kayaking in the Pohatu Marine Reserve (near Akaroa) gives you a fun and unique experience as you paddle through crystal-clear waters full of heaps of marine life and surrounded by dramatic, rugged cliffs.

This reserve is home to the rare and beautiful Hector’s dolphin and while there, you might even spot some seals and penguins as you explore secluded coves and inlets. The calm sea conditions and breathtaking scenery make Pohatu a perfect spot for novice and experienced kayakers who adore nature.

Lyttelton Harbour is another excellent kayaking tour. It’s a gorgeous location and includes Quail Island, which is full of history and natural beauty, offers peaceful paddling opportunities and has stunning views of the surrounding volcanic hills. Once you’re on the island, you can explore walking trails that lead to historic sites or chill out on secluded beaches.

Juicy January

January is full of opportunities to connect with nature and enjoy the beauty of the outdoors, but if you’re looking for a more social activity, head to Juicy Fest for a day of beats and rhymes at this great R&B and hiphop event. Then there’s The Great Kiwi Beer Festival if you like your brews.

After all that, visit the NZ Spirit Festival for some wellness treatments to recover from all the partying. For more exciting activities and unforgettable experiences, check out our Things To Do in Christchurch page.

If you're travelling at any other times, you can check out Christchurch in January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December.
