What to expect from Christchurch in May

Lucy Pascual
February 21, 2024

Christchurch in May is a breathtaking time to visit, with the crisp autumn air and golden hues creating a beautiful setting for exploration. With temperatures ranging from a chilly 4°C at night to a mild 15°C during the day, it’s the perfect time to relax amongst scenic beauty while keeping snuggly warm.

Sky-high in May

One of the most spellbinding ways to take in Christchurch's autumnal beauty is from the sky. Scenic heli tours take you on an exhilarating flight above the city and the nearby landscapes of vibrant autumn colours, with views of the Avon River snaking through the city below and the distant Southern Alps dusted with snow.

If you want a longer aerial adventure, heli flights to nearby Akaroa or Canterbury’s renowned wine region are equally breathtaking. These tours give you awe-inspiring views and the Canterbury tour includes a winery lunch, where you can indulge in the region's finest wines and gourmet cuisine in picturesque vineyards.

If you’re not a fan of heights, Christchurch's walking tours are a fantastic way to learn about the city's amazing history and culture. The half-day Christchurch City Tour is a must-do, with a friendly guide walking you through iconic landmarks such as the Christchurch Botanic Gardens, the Canterbury Museum and the recently restored city centre.

If you want a more relaxed pace, the City Meander Tour gives you exactly that. you’ll see hidden gems and local favourites while learning about the city’s recovery and transformation following the earthquakes.

An Architectural Wonderland

If you love the look of Christchurch in May, then you’ll love the Open Christchurch exploration of architecture event! This event is all about the architectural heritage and design innovation of the city and gives you a truly rare opportunity to explore some of Christchurch's most iconic historic and contemporary buildings. If you want to find even more fun activities, our Things To Do in Christchurch page has so much more.

If you're travelling at any other times, you can check out Christchurch in January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December.
