What to expect from Christchurch in November

February 17, 2024

Christchurch in November is definitely an exciting time of the year. With warmer weather temperatures ranging from 8°c to 19°c, November is the perfect month for outdoor adventures, such as day trips to nearby coastal areas like Kaikoura and Akaroa, or trying out some of the local rock climbing tours.

Delightful Day Trips

For a delightful activity to do during November in Christchurch, the Kaikoura Day Trip is a definite winner. Located just a few hours north of Christchurch, Kaikoura is famous for its marine wildlife and on this tour, you'll get the chance to see sperm whales, dolphins and seals in their natural habitats.

The view of the Kaikoura ranges adds to the beauty, making it an unforgettable experience for nature lovers. The trip also includes a visit to Cheviot, Waipara and the coastal town itself, well known for their fresh seafood – particularly crayfish. You’ll even enjoy a fish and chips lunch and an afternoon wine tasting.

If you would like a more relaxed coastal adventure, the Akaroa Day Trip is a great option. Just 1.5 hours from Christchurch, Akaroa is a charming French-inspired town nestled in an old volcanic crater and this tour offers a great mix of history, scenery and wildlife.

After stopping in Little River for some morning tea and a browse through the quaint gift shop, you’ll head to Akaroa itself, with spellbinding summit views along the way. You’ll enjoy fish and chips for lunch, plus some artisan fudge and cheese that will leave you wanting more.

The calm enchantment of Akaroa, with its small cafes and artisan shops, makes it a perfect day out for those looking to unwind while still taking in some beautiful sights. If a bit of adventure is more to your liking, the Christchurch Rock Climbing tour offers just that.

It’s no walk in the park, but the tour does cater to all skill levels, giving you an exciting way to explore the city’s natural landscapes in a more hands-on way. November’s mild conditions are perfect for climbing, and the thrill of the ascent combined with the reward of gorgeous views once you reach the top is so worth it.

Never a Boring Moment

November in Christchurch is also when the city gears up for the New Zealand Cup and Show Week. It’s one of the region’s most anticipated festivals, featuring horse racing, fashion shows and agricultural events. Our Things To Do in Christchurch page has even more.

If you're travelling at any other times, you can check out Christchurch in January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November and December.

Kaikoura - Where wildlife reigns supreme

It's rare thing for a construction worker to give you a smile, particularly if you're a gangling male like myself. Therefore you can understand my confusion when all 28 of them flashed their pearly whites at me as we weaved our way through the mountains to Kaikoura. Traffic lights, safety cones and excavators line the […]

Is New Zealand expensive for backpackers?

Earlier this year, it cost $7.49 to buy a single avocado in New Zealand. Yes, ONE. That's the equivalent of £4 or €4.50. For the same price you could buy yourself 12 pints of beer in Panama, 24 Kit Kats in India, or even 4kg of Spaghetti in Italy. Personally, the idea of eating and […]

Why backpackers are missing a trick with Christchurch!

"Just for a few days right?". That was the response I got when telling people I was going to Christchurch. Countless articles talk about the buzz of Auckland or the thrill of Queenstown, but the South Island's largest city always seems to be unfairly forgotten. I'd describe Christchurch like Justin Bieber - you're not supposed […]

New Zealand is more than just Kiwis and Hobbits

We all know a New Zealander, and we all know that they’re usually confident their country is the best in the world. Having travelled here twice and now lived here for 9 months, I must say, I can see their point. Of course, they’re fairly good at rugby, they have quite endearing accents and little […]
