What to expect from Darwin in February

Lucy Pascual
February 2, 2024

Darwin in February is in the middle of the tropical wet season, with temperatures ranging from 25°c to 32°c and very frequent rain showers. These conditions are lovely for the lush monsoon rainforests and absolutely perfect for anglers looking for adventure and a good catch.

Fishing in Paradise

February in Darwin means heavy rains and lush, green landscapes. This time of year, the city’s rivers and creeks are absolutely full of fish, plus the rain increases the water levels, making it a very popular time for fishing enthusiasts. Barramundi is the prized catch in Darwin’s fishing scene and February is a barra bonanza.

As the rain makes the water levels rise, barramundi move to the freshwater billabongs and estuaries to feed and spawn. Popular fishing spots like Mary River, Adelaide River and Shady Camp are known for their large barramundi populations, but the best way to find them is by joining a fishing tour.

If you’d prefer reef and deep-sea fishing, Darwin’s nutrient-rich waters are home to a huge variety of fish species, such as coral trout, red emperor and golden snapper. The Tiwi Islands and the reefs off Dundee Beach are excellent spots to try your luck. Charter boats offer guided trips to these spots and more, while providing you all the necessary equipment and expertise you’ll need.

If you’re planning a fishing trip to Darwin in February, make sure you pack a good hat, waterproof gear, insect repellent and plenty of drinking water. Always check the local weather forecasts and tide charts and be mindful of crocodile warnings in certain areas. Guided fishing tours ensure you’ll have a safe and productive experience.

A Fishing Tradition

Darwin has a long history as a prime fishing spot and it’s still as popular as ever. The annual Million Dollar Fish competition is one of the area’s most attractive drawcards to anglers and it’s exactly what it sounds like – a chance to not only bag a million dollars, but also some great fish and other prizes!
