What to expect from Darwin in January

Lucy Pascual
February 1, 2024

Darwin in January gives you that true-blue Aussie outback experience with a touch of tropical charm. With temperatures ranging from 25°c to 32°c, high humidity and frequent afternoon thunderstorms, January in Darwin is definitely a good time for fun water activities.

Jet Skiing Adventures

Jet skiing in Darwin is a truly exciting way to explore the city’s stunning waterfront and other nearby areas. Darwin Harbour is a hugely popular spot for jet skiing with its huge size and sheltered waters, and there are multiple jet skiing tours here.

The harbour provides a number of exciting route options with breathtaking views for both newbies and experienced skiers. As you zip across the water, you’ll adore the spectacular vistas of the city skyline and the lush, surrounding mangroves. Some tours even include stops at secluded beaches, so you can take a safe, refreshing dip in crystal-clear waters.

For another adrenaline rush, jet boating is an absolute must-do. You’ll get a thrilling ride made up of sharp turns, 360-degree spins, rapid acceleration and glorious views on the city’s high-speed jet boats or flat-bottomed air boats.

As you’re speeding through the waters, mangroves and mudflats of Darwin Harbour, you’ll hear informative commentary about the area’s interesting history and thriving marine life. Keep your eyes peeled for crocs, sharks, dolphins, mud crabs, rays and more! Don’t forget to slip, slop, slap and slide (i.e., wear a shirt, sunscreen, a hat and sunglasses) though, as those sun rays bouncing off the water can be brutal at this time of year.

A Relaxing Month

January in Darwin is usually pretty relaxed while locals wind down after the Christmas and NYE celebrations; however, it’s still usually packed with local events and activities that celebrate the region’s vibrant culture and community.

New Year’s Day is generally well-covered by local clubs and pubs, with a number of recovery parties hosted in beautiful locations. Australia Day is also pretty active, with live music, family-friendly activities and even fireworks. There’s local markets in nearby towns and Mitchell Street is always pumping. Our Things To Do in Darwin page has more great activities.
