What to expect from K'gari (Fraser Island) in April

fraser-island-tour-2

K'gari in April offers the most perfect weather, with mild, comfortable temperatures ranging from 20°c to 27°c. There’s no better time for exploring the island's unique landscapes and waterways, particularly if you choose to do it in a thrilling way, like beach driving!

Driving, the K'gari Way

Beach driving is one of the activities you definitely should do to experience K'gari's natural beauty. The island is famous for its huge network of sandy tracks and beaches that – unlike most other beaches – are open to 4WD vehicles. 75 Mile Beach is definitely the most popular route, as it’s like a natural highway running along the island's eastern coast.

This gorgeous stretch of land boasts stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and easy access to some of the island's best attractions. While driving along 75 Mile Beach, you can check out the famous Maheno Shipwreck landmark. This rusting hulk of ocean liner was stranded during a cyclone in 1935 and gives you a great view into the island's maritime history, plus excellent photo opportunities.

You’ll see some beautifully-coloured sand formations at The Pinnacles – another highlight along this route. The vibrant hues of these cliffs also provide a stunning backdrop for photos.

If you want to cool off with a swim, the Champagne Pools are relaxing and fun. These natural rock pools are repeatedly filled with ocean water, creating a bubbly, spa-like experience. Eli Creek – which is the largest freshwater creek on the eastern coast of the island – is another lovely spot and you can float down the clear, gentle waters, all the way to the sea.

Safety First

The absolute easiest way to have a 4WD experience on K’gari is to join a 4WD tour, but if you’re looking to do a self-led tour (yes, you can bring your own 4WD over on a barge), it's really important to follow safety guidelines, regulations and normal road rules. You’ll need a vehicle that’s a high-clearance 4WD and you should reduce the tyre pressure to improve traction on the sandy tracks. Driving during low tide is recommended to avoid getting stuck in soft sand or washed out by incoming waves.

Don’t turn suddenly to avoid rollovers and always carry some recovery gear and a communication device for emergencies. Insurance is essential. If you’d like to explore more of the island, look at our Things to Do on K'Gari (Fraser Island) page.
