What to expect from K'gari (Fraser Island) in December

There’s no better Christmas treat than visiting K’gari in December. As the start of the summer season, December is definitely hot and humid, but even visitors who don’t like the heat rave about their visits, due to the island’s unforgettable beauty.

Average daytime temperatures range from 22°c to 29°c, giving you the best conditions for making a splash in the island's stunning lakes. Why stop at one though? It’s a perfect time for lake hopping adventures!

Cool Summer Fun

K’gari has a number of refreshing, crystal-clear lakes, such as Lake McKenzie, Lake Birrabeen and Lake Wabby. Lake McKenzie is always highly popular, due to its glistening white sand and pure, blue water. The glass-like waters and sandy shores are the epitome of a tropical paradise and it’s the perfect spot for swimming, relaxing and escaping the summer heat.

Lake Birrabeen is another beautiful spot that’s slightly more tranquil compared to the often-busier Lake McKenzie. The deep blue waters are perfect for a peaceful swim or a quiet picnic and there’s a vibe of total serenity here.

Lake Wabby is similarly peaceful and known for its distinctive green tint and attractive shores of sand dunes and lush vegetation. It’s a unique swimming experience and a great spot for spotting the local wildlife.

The warmer weather and longer days this month mean you’ll have plenty of time to explore these lakes and their naturally beautiful surrounds. While the popularity of these lakes can mean they’re sometimes crowded, visiting them early in the day can help you enjoy a more peaceful experience.

There are plenty of local tours that can help you get the best out of your visit too. It’s one thing to see paradise for yourself, but to feel closer to it all, you’ll benefit from a tour guide telling you about the history and spiritual significance of these lakes to the local Butchulla people.

A Very K’gari Christmas

Why not celebrate Christmas by swimming, picnicking, or simply taking in the views with some lake hopping on K’gari in December? It’s a great way to experience the island's natural splendour and our Things to Do on K'Gari (Fraser Island) page will help you find the best tour options.

Travelling during the year? Find out what to expect at K'gari in January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, December
