What to expect from K'gari (Fraser Island) in February

fraser-island-tour-2

Visiting K’gari in February is perfect if you want to enjoy the cool, inner lakes, the giant forests and – for those looking for a thrill – the many sandboarding opportunities. This time of year, the island is still fairly hot, but definitely inviting, with average temperatures ranging from 23°c to 30°c. Although February is technically part of the wet season, the weather is still usually sunny and ideal for outdoor activities.

Sandboarding Adventures

K’gari is the largest sand island in the world and is covered in sand dunes, so it’s no wonder sandboarding enthusiasts flock here for some fun! The island's most popular spot for this exhilarating activity is the towering dunes near Lake Wabby, where grabbing a board and zooming down the smooth, golden slopes is almost a rite of passage.

Before hitting the dunes though, it’s important to implement a few safety measures. Firstly, wear comfortable clothing and bring plenty of water, sunscreen, and a hat to protect yourself from the hot, February sun. It's much better to go sandboarding in the morning or late afternoon when the temperatures are cooler.

It’s best to use a proper sandboard, but a boogie board will work too. A helmet is always recommended and make sure your slide area is clear of any debris before sliding. If you’re planning on sliding into the water, make sure you test the depth beforehand so you know what to expect, as some people don’t realise how deep Lake Wabby can be.

Once you’ve found the perfect dune, position your weight towards the back of your board with the front of the board slightly tilted upwards, then push off. If you want to slow down, use your hands to dig into the sand alongside and slightly behind you.

It’s definitely best to start off sitting on the board, but once you’ve mastered that, standing up can increase the adrenaline. After your exhilarating sandboarding session, you’ll love taking a dip in the refreshing, emerald-green waters of Lake Wabby.

Explore the Island

While Lake Wabby is definitely the most famous, other excellent sandboarding spots include the Hammerstone Sandblow and the dunes near Eli Creek. Each site offers a different experience and stunning views, so pack a picnic and make a day of sandboarding, or check out our Things to Do on K'Gari (Fraser Island) page.
