What to expect from K'gari (Fraser Island) in March

fraser-island-tour-2

K'gari in March has warm and pleasant weather, with temperatures ranging from 22°c to 29°c and a decent amount of rainfall (but not enough to spoil all the activities you can do on this amazing island). This makes it an excellent time of year if you’re a wildlife lover, as the island's flora is lush and native species are thriving in this rich, biodiverse wonderland.

Meet the Wild Locals

K'gari is renowned for its diverse wildlife and stunning natural landscapes, which is why most people visit. Possibly the most famous ‘wild local’ you can spot on the island is the dingo. K'gari's dingoes are considered some of the purest in Australia and March is a really great time to observe these fascinating creatures as they roam around the beaches and forests. Just be sure to observe them from a safe distance and follow all safety guidelines.

If you’re a bit of a birdwatcher, you’ll find March to be particularly rewarding, as the island is home to over 350 species. It’s not unusual to spot white-bellied sea eagles, brahminy kites and rainbow bee-eaters amongst the huge tree rainforests (where you might also spot wallabies and possums) and the island’s other ecosystems.

The beaches and coastal areas are also teeming with wildlife, so keep an eye out for marine turtles, dugongs, dolphins, rays and reptiles. The freshwater lakes – like Lake McKenzie and Wabby – are habitats for unique species like the Fraser Island tortoise and a huge number of fish and amphibian species.

You can easily do a self-led exploration of the island and find wildlife, seeing there’s plenty to be found. The best (and most comfortable) way to find all the hotspots though is by joining a wildlife-based tour. On these tours, friendly local guides will help you spot some amazing species and also provide facts about them and their lifestyles, all while you’re spoilt with other tour features.

A Spellbinding Paradise

K’gari in March is a blissful time if you adore nature. The island’s gorgeous freshwater lakes and shady forests will keep you cool, while spectacular coastal views over the crystal-clear ocean will give you that genuine tropical paradise vibe. There’s nothing like spending a day walking long stretches of beach and exploring nature, then evenings watching the sunset’s golden rays reflecting off the water. If you think you’d love K’gari, visit our Things to Do on K'Gari (Fraser Island) page.
