What to expect from K'gari (Fraser Island) in May

fraser-island-tour-2

If you’re a fishing enthusiast, K'gari in May will be an absolute paradise for you. With gorgeously-mild temperatures ranging from 17°c to 24°c, this time of year makes it comfortable to spend long, lazy hours by the water, casting lines and enjoying the island's stunning natural beauty.

Gone Fishin’

K'gari is well-known for its many fishing opportunities, from beach fishing to freshwater lakes and creeks. One of the island’s most popular spots is 75 Mile Beach, which has a long shoreline perfect for surf fishing.

On 75 Mile, you’ll catch species like tailor, whiting, bream and dart. Tailor season usually starts in May, so it’s an exciting time if you’re aiming to catch this prized sports fish.

If you’re interested in freshwater fishing, Lake McKenzie and Lake Wabby are going to make you smile. These beautiful lakes are home to multiple fish species, including bream and perch. The crystal-clear waters and serene surrounds give you a tranquil fishing experience away from the usually busy beach.

Eli Creek is another great spot for fishing, with its clear, slow-flowing waters. The creek’s estuary area is famous for its abundance of fish and you’ll likely catch species like flathead and whiting. The mangrove-lined creeks that are located on the western side of the island are also good for fishing, particularly for mud crabs and barramundi.

Fishing Regulations and Tips

If you want to go fishing on K'gari, it’s important to adhere to local rules and regulations to help preserve the island’s natural resources. Make sure you have the proper fishing permits and are aware of size and bag limits for different species. Don’t be tempted – if you throw back an undersized fish, you’re sure to catch a larger one in no time!

Fishing isn’t allowed in certain protected areas, so it’s important to check local guidelines before you start. Also, be careful of tides and weather conditions. You don’t want to put yourself at risk of harm, plus, knowing the tides and which fish species are active during specific times can help you bag the perfect catch. For other exciting activities, check our Things to Do on K'Gari (Fraser Island) page.
