What to expect from New Zealand in April

New Zealand in April is a truly magical time, with autumn landscapes lit up with red, orange and yellow, creating picturesque scenes that photographers and nature lovers adore. In the southwestern corner of the South Island, there’s the 12,607 km² Fiordland National Park, which is literally one of the most beautiful places in the world!

A National Treasure and Natural Wonder

Fiordland National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site that’s world-famous for its dramatic landscapes, steep mountains, deep fjords and dense rainforests. April’s cooler temperatures add an alpine crispness to the air that absolutely enhances the experience of exploring this untouched wilderness.

A cruise through Milford Sound or Doubtful Sound – the park’s most famous fjords – is the best way to see this glorious area and the cooler season also reduces the number of visitors, giving you a more intimate encounter with nature.

These cruises are truly unforgettable, letting you glide through the calm waters surrounded by towering cliffs and cascading waterfalls during misty autumn mornings or clear, vibrant afternoons. Keep an eye out for wildlife like seals, dolphins and even the occasional penguin.

Besides cruises, you can explore Fiordland in many other ways. Guided kayaking tours allow you to explore the hidden coves and serene inlets upon calm waters. This is a great way to get up close to the park’s diverse marine life.

There are many walking tracks that showcase Fiordland’s diverse ecosystems too, such as the Key Summit Track / Routeburn Track, which has panoramic views over the Humboldt and Darran Mountains. Guided hikes to this area are more comfortable at this time of year and the autumn colours add an extra layer of beauty to the already breathtaking vistas.

For a birds-eye view of the nearby area, head over to Queenstown for a scenic flight adventure. As you soar through the sky, you’ll be treated to panoramic views of rolling plains and snow-capped alpine peaks, with the option of landing to explore the vastness and beauty of the region.

A Serene April Adventure

If you’re visiting New Zealand in April, Fiordland National Park is a destination that you’ll remember forever. It doesn’t matter if you’re cruising the fiords, kayaking through the tranquil waters or hiking through stunning landscapes, you’ll be awestruck the whole time. There’s so much more to do though, so check out our Things To Do in New Zealand page for more.
