New Zealand in July means the heart of winter has arrived! The country transforms into a winter wonderland, perfect for an alpine adventure. Whether you want to experience a winter hike through the majestically scenic countryside or one of the many other snow-based activities. It’s the ideal time to experience the majestic Southern Alps and all that it has to offer.

New Zealand is a True Winter Wonderland

Stretching across the South Island like a resting giant, the Southern Alps boasts some of the most stunning winter landscape views in the world. The prime time of the year to visit is in July, with the rugged terrain and snow-covered peaks providing a breathtaking environment for all kinds of winter sports and exploration.

The local Alpine tours are a must for those who want to see the mountainous ranges up close and the beauty will bring a joyous tear to your eye. Some of the available tours include exciting offroad drives through alpine passes, breathtaking scenic flights and guided treks to some of the most remote and scenic locations in the Alps.

If you love the great outdoors, hiking through the mountainous ranges of New Zealand in July is an experience that not many other people can claim they’ve accomplished. If you want to do a self-guided trek, the Routeburn Track or the Hooker Valley Track provide stunning 360-degree views of snow-dusted mountains, frozen crystal lakes and serene, majestic valleys.

If you’d prefer a guided option, a jaunt to the Franz Josef Glacier or the Tasman Glacier via helicopter will bring a smile to your face. Your guide will give you the skills necessary to navigate the snowy paths, along with expert insight in a safe and fun way.

Hit The Slopes, Aotearoa Style

With the snow season on full blast in July, popular destinations like Queenstown, Wanaka and Mt. Ruapehu offer world-class snowboarding and skiing adventures. Even if you’ve never set foot in the snow before, there are slopes, and instructors for every level. If you’d prefer a less frosty adventure, there are many more fun activities available on our Things To Do in New Zealand page.
