New Zealand in June is the start of winter, with cooler temperatures and a sense of serenity as the summer crowds have started to disperse. It’s the absolute best time to take a breathtaking adventure into the marine life of Kaikoura, a coastal town known for its distinct and rich biodiversity and mesmerising whale watching tours.

Have a Whale of a Time in Aotearoa

Kaikoura is an adorable little town located on the South Island’s east coast and is extremely famous for its whale watching. The prime time for spotting the local majestic sperm whales is in the month of June, so you’re in luck.

On a Kaikoura whale watching tour, you can relax and watch as these incredible mammals emerge from the depths of the ocean, spout and dive back into the watery abyss. The experienced guides have so much knowledge to offer, as they provide insightful commentary of the wonders of the marine environment that surrounds you.

Not only will you have the chance to see the wonder of the majestic sperm whales, but you’ll also get the chance to encounter migrating humpback whales, orcas, fur seals and even blue whales.

While whale watching is the drawcard at Kaikoura, the town also has other exciting marine life experiences available. The area’s swimming with dolphin tours are a thrilling way to interact with these intelligent and curious creatures in their natural habitat. You’ll never forget the magical exhilaration of swimming alongside pods of gorgeous dolphins as they play.

Wonderful Winter Fun

Kaikoura is the place to head to for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike who want a thrilling-yet-serene experience. Whether you’re enchanted by the whales or diving into the crystal-like waters with playful dolphins and seals, the marine life here is incredible. This is New Zealand at its most untamed and an ideal place for a family getaway. For even more exciting activities, visit our Things To Do in New Zealand page.
