What to expect from Sydney in January

Lucy Pascual
January 17, 2024

Sydney in January is the peak of summer, with long, sunny days and temperatures ranging from 20°c to 27°c. The city is full of energy and there’s an endless amount of outdoor activities you can participate in – especially along Sydney’s famous coastlines and waterways.

Hang Ten at Bondi Beach

January in Sydney is the perfect time to dive into Sydney’s surfing culture, especially at the World-famous Bondi Beach. Bondi boasts consistent waves and warm waters, so it’s an ideal spot for beginners and experienced surfers alike.

There are multiple surf camps run along Bondi that offer lessons catering to all skill levels. Whether you're learning to stand up on your board for the first time or honing your techniques, there’s friendly and experienced instructors who will teach you the best tips to get you riding the waves in no time.

The mornings are definitely the most inviting time to surf at Bondi, with the sun being less intense and the waves calmer. After your lesson, take a stroll along the Bondi to Coogee coastal walk, where you’ll get stunning views of the ocean and cliffs and maybe even spot some local wildlife, like dolphins.

If you want to explore Sydney from a different perspective, kayaking within the city will give you an unforgettable experience. The beautifully-calm waters of Sydney Harbour give you a stunning backdrop, with the iconic Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge in view.

With multiple guided kayak tours available, you’ll learn more about the city's history while gliding through its calm waters. You can also rent a kayak and explore at your own pace. Either way, you’ll get the chance to explore hidden gems like Shark Island or paddle around the quiet bays of Mosman. The early mornings and late afternoons are the most comfortable and visually magical.
