Sydney in October has glorious temperatures ranging from about 15°c to 23°c, creating the perfect atmosphere for exploring the city’s spooky side as Halloween approaches. This month, Sydney offers you a range of thrilling experiences if you’re intrigued by the macabre and frightening.

Spooky City Fun

Sydney's amazing history has many tales of the supernatural and you can join a ghost tour to explore the city's most haunted spots, including The Rocks historic district, which is known for its ghost sightings. The Rocks is also where the first fleet landed in 1788 and Sydney Gaol (one of the the first prisons in Australia) once stood.

The Rocks ghost tours will take you through spooky streets and centuries-old buildings, where you will hear many eerie stories of unsolved mysteries from the city's early days. These tours include a visit to the Hero of Waterloo, which is known as the city's most haunted pub where the resident ghost, Ann, is often heard playing the piano.

There’s also visits to two other spooky sites, with your guide sharing spine-chilling accounts of paranormal activity, such as the Woman in Black, the notorious Rocks Push gang and the vanishing sailors. Alongside tales of restless spirits and paranormal activities, these night tours also teach you about the history of the area.

For a more direct kind of thrill, Sydney’s true crime tours give you a look at the city’s criminal past. These tours often focus on notorious figures and events that have shaped Sydney’s history. Explore the tales of gangsters, infamous heists and unsolved murders as you walk through the very streets where these crimes took place.

One popular tour is the Sydney True Crime Tour, which covers the dark side of Sydney’s early colonial days and beyond. Guides will tell you stories of the city’s worst criminals and dramatic events from the city’s rough past. You’ll visit multiple locations linked to infamous crimes and hear about the criminal underworld that flourished in the area.

Halloween in Sydney

If these tours aren’t spooky enough for you, then you’re in luck. Sydney in October is full of the Halloween spirit with Australia’s first Halloween festival called the Ghost in The Rocks. For less frights, there’s the SXSW Sydney festival, which showcases tech, innovation and gaming. The Parramatta Lanes street festival is also an exciting must-do if you’re spending October in Sydney, plus, our Things to Do in Sydney page has even more!
