Where does the trip start and finish?
This tour starts outside Attic Backpackers in Auckland (31 Wellesley Street West, Auckland CBD) at 7.30 am and ends at Naumi Hotel in Wellington. If you’re an international visitor, we recommend flying into Aotearoa New Zealand via Auckland Airport.
What if I'm travelling solo?
What if I'm travelling solo?
About 75% of people who book a Stray Travel tour are solo travellers, so you’ll be in good company! There’s no dorm room accommodation on this tour, so you don’t need to think about about socialising with your entire group 24/7. Instead, you will be staying in twin/double room accommodation with one other person from your tour group.
If you’d prefer a private room during your trip, this can be arranged. To give yourself the best chance of securing a private room, we strongly recommend selecting the private room option at the time of booking.
Will this tour suit me?
Will this tour suit me?
Do you appreciate the finer things in life, such as incredible scenery, the wonderful Kiwi culture, and having a fantastic time? If so, then a tour with Stray Travel will absolutely suit you!
Most people who book with Stray Travel have varying fitness levels and are aged between 20 and 50, but there’s no maximum age limit; a sense of adventure lives forever! All walks, hikes, and activities are optional, so if you’d prefer to sit out on a trek or a certain adventure just isn’t for you, then that’s no problem! There’s something for everyone on this North Island trip.
What are the visa and entry requirements?
What are the visa and entry requirements?
As is standard for all countries, Aotearoa New Zealand requires all international tourists to hold a valid passport (with a minimum of 6 months validity).
For the most up-to-date visa requirements, we suggest contacting your local embassy or consulate or getting in touch with your travel agent.
It is your sole responsibility to ensure you have the correct travel documentation. Your visa requirements will vary depending on what passport you are travelling on and how long you plan to stay in Aotearoa New Zealand.
Do I need travel insurance?
Do I need travel insurance?
Yes, travel insurance is a requirement for all Stray Travel trips. You’ll want to make sure your insurance covers you for loss, accident, tour cancellations, and medical costs.
How much spending money do I need?
How much spending money do I need?
Your accommodation and some meal costs are covered in the tour price. As such, the only things you really need to budget for are souvenirs, additional meals, and any optional paid activities you’d like to participate in.
For food, it all depends on how fancy you’d like to get. Meal prices in New Zealand can vary between $20 - $100 (NZD) depending on the restaurant and the location, so it really comes down to how much you’d like to spend.
Optional activities also vary in price, depending on how adventurous you’d like to get. For example, a museum trip may cost $25 (NZD) per person, whereas a skydive may be closer to $400 (NZD). We recommend having a think about what activities are available on this tour and which ones you’d like to do and then budgeting accordingly.
The majority of shops and restaurants in Aotearoa New Zealand will accept a MasterCard, a Visa debit, or a credit card. However, it’s always handy to carry around $50-$100 (NZD) with you at any given time just in case. European travellers should also note that NZ shops don’t accept Maestro Cards, though you can use these cards at ATMs to withdraw money (as long as it’s set up for worldwide usage).
What should I pack?
What should I pack?
We recommend bringing a backpack or a small/medium suitcase (up to 15kg) filled with the following items:
- Your clothes (with at least one warm jumper and a pair of trousers)
- Swimsuit and towel
- Bug repellent
- Sunblock and hat
- Day pack
- Water bottle
- Waterproof jacket
- Walking shoes/trainers
- Sarong/shawl
In the colder months between May and September, we also recommend packing a warm hat, a jacket, and light thermals or clothes you can layer.
You won’t need any of the following:
- Sleeping bag
- Pillow
- Blankets or sheets
What are the luggage restrictions?
What are the luggage restrictions?
Luggage on this tour is restricted to one backpack, bag, or case per person with a maximum weight of 15 kg as your Stray bus has limited storage space. You can also travel with a daypack to carry your camera, valuables, raincoat, and any other items you may require throughout the day.
Altogether, we suggest travelling with no more than 23 kg of luggage. While you'll only ever have to transport your luggage short distances, you’ll need to be able to manage this on your own. If you are going to be travelling with a lot more than 23kg, then please let the tour operator know before the day of your tour.
What style of accommodation am I staying in?
What style of accommodation am I staying in?
You'll stay in comfy 3-4 star hotels for most nights on this tour. In the more unique destinations, you’ll spend the night in more exclusive accommodations, such as high country farms or scenic lodges close to the waterfront or national park. Hotel rooms on this tour are ensuite, while shared facilities are in the unique destinations. Upgrading to solo occupancy may be possible, subject to availability.
