Has Canberra always been the capital of Australia?

Actually, no! Canberra hasn’t always been the capital of Australia. However, if you’re confused because you thought it was Sydney, we’re about to confuse you even more… Sorry!

Sydney has never been the capital of Australia; that’s just a myth (sorry, Sydney). Melbourne, however, did serve as Australia’s capital once upon a time, acting as the interim seat of government from 1901 until Canberra was officially established in 1927.

To add to the intrigue, Canberra was actually established as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne, who both wanted to be the capital so badly that neither city ended up with the title. Instead, the federal government built Canberra between the two cities as a way of keeping everyone happy. Did it work? Well, that’s yet to be seen. Perhaps we Aussies aren’t such a laid-back bunch, after all…
