A guide to navigating the Top End's summer season

WITH summer 2022 just around the corner, it's about right now that many of us start thinking about where we plan on spending our holidays.

While many flock to our beautiful coastlines to feel our toes in the sand and salt water on our skin, there's a hidden summer secret that many are missing out on. Why wait to escape the cold? Summer starts early in the NT!

Summer in the Top End.

Although some may be deterred by the Northern Territory's summer (also known as the 'wet season') that extends from November through to April, we're here to prove that this is, in fact, where and when some of the best magic happens.

Enjoy this quick guide to navigating a tropical summer in the top end of the NT and discover what makes this time so waterfall...I mean, wonderful.

WHAT IS THE TROPICAL SUMMER SEASON?

Also known as the Northern Territory's 'Tropical Summer', the Wet Season is aptly named due to the weather systems that present themselves at this time of year, including isolated monsoonal rains and summer storms that light up the night sky.

SORRY...MONSOONAL RAINS?? SUMMER STORMS???

Yep, that's right. It all comes down to geography and *science* and other stuff I won't bore you with - but many NT locals and experienced travellers say that this is THE BEST time to visit because it’s when the land truly comes alive.

I'm talking beautiful waterfalls, breathtaking sunsets and a plethora of flora and fauna that seemingly spring to like when summer rolls around.

SO WHAT CAN I EXPECT WEATHER WISE?

The yearly average is around 1570mm (62”) of rainfall with temperatures during this period usually ranging from 25°C to 33°C (77°F to 91°F) and humidity reaching higher than 80%.

That being said, with the rain comes a bounty of benefits - including many waterholes now being full enough to take a dip in! Because between the occasional isolated storms are warm, sunny days – perfect for any summer lovers’ holidays.

DOES THE TROPICAL SUMMER SEASON LIMIT WHERE I CAN GO AND WHAT I CAN DO?

Although access to some attractions in remote parts of the Top End may be limited this time of year because of flooding, there are still plenty of activities including Darwin harbour cruises, ferries and scenic plane and helicopter flights available to enjoy.

You can start planning and booking your NT adventure HERE with great deals across all of our Top End tours and activities.
